ARCTIC: ADVENTURERS - AIRSHIP ITALIA DOCUMENTARY

Don't miss this documentary on Monday 10th December. The Italia story has been recounted in print many times and it's good to see the story in film. Now that winter is upon us, it will remind us in a small way of what extremes these men had to face.

Date and Time

20:00 - Monday 10th December

Channel 4

Overview :-

In the spring of 1928 the great airship Italia crashed into polar ice and ended General Umberto Nobiles ambitious expedition to the North Pole.

Seven men were killed, while the remaining nine, including Nobile, battled against desperate weather conditions, polar bears, and insufficient food supplies. Rescuers from Russia, Norway and Italy had to race to reach Nobile and his men before the ice that they were camped on melted away.

This programme features startling rare footage from the expedition, with a dramatic reconstruction of the crash, the survival on the ice, and the rescue operation.
